Ernie Davis made history inside late 1950's and early 1960's as running back for the Syracuse Orangeman, becoming the initial African American player to win the Heisman Trophy. But the Syracuse people developed a mistake which was just caught, since Ernie Davis did not have the Nike swoosh logo on him when he broke barriers in the past. The Ernie Davis statue was revealed yesterday before Syracuse's game with Penn State. But it was only discovered just before then, in event the statue was finished, that the Ernie Davis statue had a Nike swoosh on his cleats. The problem is that the famous Nike logo debuted in 1971, well after Ernie Davis stopped playing. In fact, the Nike swoosh debuted eight years after Ernie Davis died of leukemia in 1963. A Syracuse spokesman said that the mistake was caught before the unveiling from the Ernie Davis statue, but at that time it had been too far gone to alter it before last Saturday. The spokesman took to convey that the mistake will probably be corrected immediately.
