MADRID, Spain -- Top-ranked Rafael Nadal is back in a clay court final at the Madrid Open, where Japans Kei Nishikori denied an all-Spanish meeting by converting his 10th match point in a grueling victory over David Ferrer on Saturday. Nadal, the defending champion, reached his first clay final since winning in Rio de Janeiro in February with a 6-4, 6-4 win against countryman Roberto Bautista Agut. Ferrer saved nine match points before Nishikori ultimately overcame his late nerves for a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 victory that propelled him into his first Masters series final. Earlier, Maria Sharapova held her nerve to reach her second consecutive womens final, where she will play Simona Halep of Romania. After Nishikori won the first set, Ferrer delivered an ace to save his first match point in the 10th game, then broke Nishikori on the fifth try one game later. Ferrer took it to a third set after saving two break points. Despite needing treatment on his right thigh before the start of the deciding set, Nishikoris powerful groundstrokes overwhelmed Ferrer for a key break in the sixth game. There was a dramatic ninth game that lasted nearly 20 minutes. Nishikori smashed error after error with victory in his grasp as the local fans backed Ferrer, who ultimately hit long for the 12th-ranked Nishikori to earn his 14th straight win, including a perfect 10-0 on clay this season. Bautista Agut, playing in his first career Masters series semifinal, couldnt match the experience of Nadal, who continues to improve after coming to the Magic Box centre having lost at consecutive clay tournaments for the first time in a decade. Nadal took advantage of Bautista Aguts timid start to break right away for a lead he would never surrender. Nadals concentration dipped temporarily in the second set as Bautista Agut clawed to within 4-3 before Nadal overcame his 21 errors by pulling away to reach his 90th career final. "Psychologically speaking about Monte Carlo and Barcelona, whenever I had nerves, I was not ready and I was a little bit down," said Nadal, bidding to be the first repeat winner from his sixth final appearance. A year on from the first of two hip surgeries, the 34-year-old fullback has been training with the Borussia Moenchengladbach reserve team. Out of contract with the German side, he says he is ready to resume his career. "Im full into everything now," he said of his training. "Im completely symptom-free, no pain, no problems. ... Im able to do anything, really. Im fully fit." Stalteri has had arthroscopic surgery on both hips, the first late last May and the second in early July. He had an impingement in each hip and surgery was needed to clean out the joint and allow it to move freely and without pain. "Thats where Ive gained a lot of my mobility back," he said. "Im a lot freer down there now than I was before the operation." His rehab, while long, has gone according to schedule. His English surgeons original estimate was nine to 12 months to return to full fitness. The former Canadian captain spent the first nine days on crutches after the first surgery, but just two for the second. Months in the gym followed. "I have to say that Im feeling as good as Ive felt for a long, long time," he told The Canadian Press from Germany. "Im sharp, the movements are good. The movements have improved by the week as Ive got back into training." The veteran defender is now out of contract with Moenchengladbach after stints with Werder Bremenn, Tottenham and Fulham.dddddddddddd Stalteri has won 84 caps for Canada, most recently in October 2010 in a friendly with Ukraine. That was his last competitive game, since he had fallen out of favour under a new coach at Moenchengladbach. The native of Brampton, Ont., who now makes his home in Duesseldorf, says his training has proved he can play again "at the top level." "The search (for a new club) begins now," he said. "Id like to play again, thats for sure," he added. "But there comes a time where you also think about whats after football. But first and foremost, Im aiming at definitely playing again ... As strength and conditioning goes, Im at strong as Ive ever been and as powerful as Ive ever been because youre living in the gym, doing more and more work and youre able to do more and more work because the flexibility is there." Stalteri says he is open as to where he might play, although family will play a role in deciding. He is married with two young kids -- six and three. "Im not going to sit here and say it has to be in a certain country or not, but obviously its got to make sense for myself and my family and its got to be a situation where its a new challenge and something youre looking forward to every day and you want to get to work and do the job. "That something were looking for right now and hopefully we can find that." Whatever happens, he hopes to stay in soccer -- on or off the field. ' ' '
