Myth of Empires devs take legal action to save the game

New drama on the horizon in the world of video games: In early December, the game Myth of Empires was withdrawn from Steam, after accusations that its source code was stolen from Ark: Survival Evolved.

But studio Angela Game is not hearing it that way, and has filed a lawsuit to have the DMCA notice (which protects copyright) withdrawn. On paper, this shows that the Chinese developer has confidence in their game, and that Steam's decision was completely unfounded. Several documents to this effect also accompany the complaint filed in court, some of which describe the original decision as "having caused and threatened irreparable damage".

Except that in the wake, Snail Games and Studio Wildcard counter-attacked with serious arguments: "The wrongs of Angela [Game, note] begin in November 2018, when Yan Li Ping, an employee of the Chinese branch of Snail [Games, editor's note] requested and received the source code from Ark - for what appeared to be legitimate reasons. But he secretly copied the code and a few months later left to work at Angela “.

One-person industrial espionage is pretty serious in itself, but according to Studio Wildcard, things go even further: “Of the 82 people whose names appear in Angela's game credits, 60 are dead. 'former Snail employees'. If one is careful not to draw conclusions while awaiting the increasingly inevitable trial, the coincidence seems relatively large.

The counteroffensive continues by indicating that Angela has been "fanatically modifying the code" of Myth of Empires for some time, to remove all evidence pointing to an intellectual property violation.

Studio Wildcard and Snail Games continue their presentation, pointing to too many similarities between the two games, including in the code itself. And to finish in style, the final highlight comes from Suter, the CEO of BattlEye Innovations. This is the company behind the eponymous anti-cheat used in PUBG, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite and, you guessed it, Ark: Survival Evolved. If the technology is rented to different studios, it is up to them to integrate it into their projects in a personalized way.

However, Suter noted in Myth of Empires strings (a series of characters, roughly speaking) which should not be there, and were probably copied. Relatively funny, words like "BattlEye" have been replaced with "BatEye" which is kind of the pinnacle of Chinese counterfeiting.

We are therefore awaiting an official response from the court, but the elements proposed by Studio Wildcard and Snail Games appear extremely solid for the moment. If they really are, it could backfire on Myth of Empires, which could definitely get banned from multiple countries ...
