EA Sports FC 25: A Familiar Yet Frustrating Experience

For years, my friends and I have made it a tradition to gather around the release of EA’s annual football game—now called EA Sports FC instead of FIFA. There’s usually a sense of excitement as we boot up the new title, but this year, that excitement has fizzled out. One friend bluntly said, “FIFA isn’t fun anymore.” Another added, “It’s not supposed to be fun; it’s a noble undertaking.” These comments reflect how Ultimate Team has morphed from a fun pastime into a source of frustration, yet we all keep coming back.

The main issue with EA Sports FC 25 is how little has changed from last year. The menus look almost identical to FC 24 and are actually worse—riddled with glitches and slow load times. The graphics are the same, too. I even opened up FC 24 to compare, and the differences were barely noticeable. EA has, once again, re-released the same game with only minor adjustments. Some in-game elements, like player cards and team kits, are still from last season, making it feel like EA didn’t even bother to update everything.

On the bright side, there are some welcome additions. Rush, a new 5v5 casual mode, offers a fun change of pace. It’s a great way to enjoy Ultimate Team without the high stakes, especially when playing with friends. However, playing with randoms can be frustrating as they tend to overuse flashy moves and lose possession. The commentary in Rush also gets old fast, so muting it is a good idea. I only hope EA doesn’t abandon Rush the way it did Volta, which started strong but quickly faded away.

The new tactics system is another positive. I’ve set up a formation where Trent drops into midfield while Frimpong acts as an inside forward, creating an overload in the middle. This adds a real sense of strategy to the game, making it feel more like managing a real football team. The new Player Roles feature also helps players feel more unique, enhancing the tactical depth.

Yet, despite these improvements, EA Sports FC 25 still feels like a recycled product. None of the new features are groundbreaking, and the game could benefit from a live-service model that updates with the real-world football season. That way, we wouldn’t have to shell out full price for what is essentially the same game every year.
