Beneath the surface of Wraeclast, beyond the reach of sunlight and maps, lies an infinite darkness. The Azurite Mine, introduced in the Delve league, offers players in POE 1 a completely different kind of endgame experience. Unlike mapping, which focuses on clearing zones and defeating bosses, Delve is about descent. Deeper and deeper into the darkness, where rewards grow richer and dangers grow deadlier with every level.
Accessing the mine requires completing a short questline during the campaign. Once unlocked, players use sulphite, a resource found in maps, to fuel their crawler. This massive vehicle serves as a mobile base, illuminating the darkness and providing a safe zone. Players must stay within its light; stray too far, and the darkness overwhelms, dealing rapid damage that no amount of defense can mitigate. The crawler sets the pace, and players must clear the path ahead.
The mine is divided into nodes connected by dark paths. Each node offers a specific reward: currency, fossils, resonators, or unique items. Choosing which nodes to pursue, managing sulphite reserves, and balancing risk against reward is a constant calculation. A rich node deep in the darkness promises valuable fossils but requires traveling through dangerous side paths. The decision to push deeper or turn back is always present.
Fossils are the primary reward of Delve. These items, when combined with resonators in crafting, allow for targeted modifications that cannot be achieved through any other method. A single fossil might increase the chance of rolling physical modifiers while blocking caster modifiers. Combining fossils creates increasingly specific outcomes, enabling crafts that would otherwise be impossible. The best items in POE 1 often have fossils in their origin story.
Beyond the regular nodes lie the biomes. Each biome has unique monsters and challenges. The frozen Abyssal City. The fungal Caverns. The magma-filled Magma Fissure. The petrified Petrified Forest. Each biome offers different fossils and rewards, encouraging players to explore widely rather than simply diving straight down.
At the deepest reaches of the mine lurk the Aul bosses. These rare encounters spawn in specific biomes and offer the ultimate challenge of Delve. Defeating Aul requires a build capable of handling complex mechanics under the constant pressure of darkness. The rewards, including exclusive unique items and massive fossil caches, are commensurate with the difficulty.
For players who love POE 1 Currency, Delve offers a permanent alternative to mapping. There is no randomness in layout, no need to acquire and roll maps. Simply descend, fight, and collect. The sense of progression is linear and satisfying, each new depth a milestone. In the endless abyss, the grind never stops, and the rewards never cease.
